Dried currants, also called Zante currants, are tiny raisins made by drying a variety of seedless grape known as Black Corinth (often sold fresh as “Champagne grapes”). Dried currants are no relation to fresh currants, which are actually a type of berry.
Dried currants make good decoration for gingerbread cookies, and are delicious stirred into scone dough. In savory cooking, stir dried currants into rice pilaf, or into stuffing for chicken, turkey, or game hens, to add texture and subtle sweetness. Due to their small size, they have a sweet, tangy and intense flavor and add texture and sweetness to both sweet and savory dishes.
