From the leaves to the seed, holy basil is considered a tonic for the body, mind, and spirit. Different parts of the plant are recommended for treating different conditions. For instance:
- use its fresh flowers for bronchitis;
- the leaves and seeds, with black pepper, for malaria
- the whole plant for diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
- the pill and ointment form for eczema
- use an alcohol extract for stomach ulcers and eye diseases
- use an essential oil made from the leaves for insect bites
Basil powder is best used when added to sauces, pasta salads and meats, such as grilled fish and roasted chicken. In addition, due to this herb being fairly delicate, use it to make a paste or to simply decorate a plate before serving up the main course. Compliment the citrus flavours by pairing with tomatoes, garlic, onion, pear, mint and strawberry. Use ground Basil in replacement of any recipes where the fresh mature herb is used.
